Pyrite (Ref: 6101)
Nanisivik Mine | Nanisivik | Baffin Island | Qikiqtaaluk Region | Nunavut | Canada

The Canadian Nanisivik Mine north of the Arctic Circle on Baffin Island operated from 1976 to 2002 and was Canada’s first mine in the Arctic. Good specimens of all types and species, especially highly aesthetic ones like this one, are very rare and sought after due to the remote location as well as the attribute as being the first one. Furthermore, even during the period of active mining, specimens trickled onto the market rather than being available in larger quantities. These facts elevate the present piece, which consists of a matrix of solid Pyrite and black Sphalerite, covered with small Pyrite crystals and clear Calcite scalenohedrons. Three perfect Pyrite cubes measuring almost 1.5 cm on edge are prominently perched on the matrix. The perfect and extremely precisely beveled edges could also be octahedral modifications of the cubes. The Pyrite crystals have a brassy yellow color and a very fresh metallic luster. This is definitely a TOP locality specimen!Data last checked on 22nd Feb 2025 - specimen may no longer be available
