Microcline (amazonite) from Colorado is one of our Top 100 Minerals.
Minerals from pegmatite deposits are among the most popularly collected and amazonite---a green-blue variety of the potassium feldspar, microcline---is no exception. Highly desired are the superb amazonite and smoky quartz combinations found in and around the Pike’s Peak batholith in Colorado. The green-blue amazonite commonly exhibits white “caps”---an overgrowth of either white potassium feldspar or in some cases white albite.
Easily the most significant material comes from the Tree Root Pocket discovery made in June 1997 at the Two Point Claim in Teller County. The combination of deep, saturated green-blue amazonite and lustrous nearly black smoky quartz is unrivalled.
Although the most sought after specimens are the amazonite, microcline also occurs in the area’s pegmatite deposits as tan, pink, gray, cream, and pure white crystals. Some specimens have associated species, which include albite, goethite, fluorite, quartz, and hematite pseudomorphs after siderite.
