Quartz Var. Herkimer Diamond (Ref: 5458)

Can you imagine that this is a German Herkimer specimen? (I just made that term up!) Until I saw Quartz specimens from the Uffeln Quarry, a former limestone deposit in northwest Germany for the first time I had no idea about their quality either. This superb Quartz specimen with a solitary single crystal is prominently perched on a crystallized, beige-brown limestone matrix. The extremely sharp crystal is water clear and transparent. Despite a small chip on the crystal base, this is by far the best small cabinet-sized specimen from the quarry that I have ever seen. When you consider that after the quarry was closed in 1982 is was turned into a nature conservancy that is strictly off limits, you can imagine how rare such magnificent specimens are today. The specimen was formerly housed in the Dr. Schönfelder collection.
